The Hospital

Nationwide Chi ldren’s Hospital has approximately 1,000 medical staff members, and almost half have faculty appointments with the Ohio State University College of Medicine. The OSU College of Medicine Department of Pediatrics is the largest single department within the college (400 members), is located at NCH. Children’s directly employs over 600 physicians, dentists, residents and fellows, including wholly-owned group practices for Radiologists, Anesthesiologists, Pathologists, Psychiatry, and multiple pediatric surgery subspecialties.

Responsibilities:
Location:
The position will be based at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, 700 Children’s Drive, Columbus, OH 43205.

Reporting Relationships:
The Chief Human Resource Officer (CHRO) reports to the President, NCH, and works closely with the Chief Nursing Officer, Chief Financial Officer, General Counsel, Chief Medical Officer, and Presidents of the Research Institute and Foundation. The position reports directly to the Chief Executive Officer for purposes of staffing and facilitating the Board Compensation and Development Committee.

Position Charter:
The Chief Human Resource Officer position serves as the primary leader for a wide range of H.R. issues confronting NCH including talent, management development, employment, compensation, benefits, payroll, employee health, employee-related compliance and risk management. Direct reports include six Director-level positions. The CHRO is responsible for an annual operating budget of $13 million, and an annual employment benefits budget of over $140 million.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Leads the development of NCH plans, strategy and policies for talent acquisition, development, and
the entire human resource function, including employee satisfaction, benefit s, and compensation

structures.

  • Works closely with the CEO, General Counsel and President-NCH to develop and implement Board
Committee processes which assure IRS compliance and the recruitment, retention and continuity of

top executive talent.

  • Works closely with the senior hospital leadership team to ensure a positive employment environment
at all levels. Helps ensure employment environment is free of harassment, violence, substance abuse.

Maintains a union-free workplace.

  • Works closely with COO, CNO and Chief Diversity Officer and others to develop diversity plans and
strategies. Supports the development of policies and initiatives to enhance the diversity of NCH staff.

  • Develop and manage annual operating budgets for the Human Resources department and employee
benefits.

  • Works closely with the General Counsel and oth ers to assure Corporate Compliance with all
applicable federal, state, local regulations, and to coordinate response to employee grievances or legal

actions.

  • Leads and oversees recruitment, retention and employee relations programs.
  • Leads and oversees employee and manager training and organizational development programs.
  • Implements and oversees compensation and benefits programs, including compliance with ERISA,
IRS and other applicable regulations.

  • Implements and oversees payroll practices and processes, including compliance with FLSA, IRS and
other applicable regulations.

  • Oversees the management of the employee health services function.
  • Oversees the management of the payroll function
  • Develops and maintains strong relationships at all levels (administrative, medical staff, Trustees,
community leaders)

  • Ensures Human Resources operations are coordinated with NCH strategic plan, operations, financial
processes and compliance activities.

  • Communicates effectively with all constituencies both within and outside the organization. Maintains
positive community relationships

The Candidate

Education:
Master’s degree in Human Resources or related field.Professional Qualifications:

The ideal candidate has a minimum of 10 years’ experience in human resources, healthcare administration or related field. He/she will have 5 years’ administration or executive experience in human resources. A working knowledge of healthcare/hospital environment (terminology, employment practices, etc..) is highly preferred.
