The Polaris Surgery Center is a freestanding Ambulatory Surgery Center dedicated to the delivery of care to patients in need of surgical services in an ou! tpatient setting.
POSITION OBJECTIVE: Accountable for the provision of nursing care within the assigned pre-operative, intra-operative or post-operative areas of the surgery center. Ensure patient needs are met in accordance with instructions of physician and facility administrative procedures. Participates in various quality activities as appropriate and as directed by the Director of Nursing, Charge Nurses, Medical Director and/or the Quality Committee(s). They are a resource for complex decision making and establishing individualized plan of care for the perioperative patient.

General Duties and Responsibilities:
Effectively organizes time, equipment, supplies, and personnel.
Uses equipment effectively by anticipating patient needs and providing appropriate care.
Confirms that proper techniques and procedures are used according to accepted Standards of Practice and organizational ! policies and procedures.
Assists with the ordering, receiv! ing, and storage of supplies.
Maintains order and cleanliness of the pre-operative, intra-operative or post-operative areas.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities for Pre-operative Area:
Greets patient on arrival in the pre-operative area and informs the patient/family about all routine care and procedures related to the pre-operative experience.
Explains consents for surgery, patientâs rights and responsibilities, and pre-operative/post-operative instructions.
Completes the identification process and initiates nursing documentation in the patientâs medical record.
Assures belongings are properly labeled and placed under patient stretcher.
Performs pre-operative assessment as required per policy and procedure such as: allergies, last intake of food or drink, and documents responses.
Verifies operative consent for correct procedure, doctor's name, patient's signature, and date and time, and obtains all necessary signatures.
! Verifies chart has completed history and physical.
Performs vital signs (blood pressure, temperature, pulse and respirations) and documents in the medical record.
Reviews and verifies completion of pre-operative checklist.
Verifies chart for appropriate laboratory work and notifies physician (anesthesiologist/attending physician) of any abnormal value, and documents in the patientâs medical record.
Verifies physician's orders and performs procedures as ordered.
Administers appropriate medications such as eye drops, antibiotics and pre-medications per physician's orders.
Prepares area as designated by procedure and documents pre-operative care according to policy and procedure.
Communicates with anesthesia provider(s), Operating Room personnel, and/or physician(s) about any problems which arise.
Reports malfunctioning equipment and safety concerns to the Director of Nursing/designee.
Adheres to safety policies and procedures; i.e. dispos! al of needles.
Reports observed or suspected safety violations, haz! ards and policy and procedure noncompliance to appropriate organization personnel.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities for Intra-operative Area:
Maintains surgical services as assigned, in accordance with written policies and in compliance with various regulatory and accrediting agencies and is responsible for quality patient care.
Assists with the development and monitoring of the standards of assigned areas pertaining to the operating room, sterilization and decontamination, and corresponding ancillary areas.
Responsible for efficient and effective patient care and quality improvement.
Helps in determining goals for assigned area and effectively manages resources to achieve the goals.
Maintains a collegial relationship with physicians to ensure quality patient care.
At the direction of the Director of Nursing, maintains an adequate inventory for assigned area, including, but not limited to, equipment and supplies.
Assists ! in recruitment, selection, training, supervision, and retention of operating room/corresponding ancillary area employees.
Assists with staffing assigned area and performing daily operational processes.
Responsible for fostering an environment that promotes staff growth and development.
Supervises and adheres to Surgery Center policies, procedures, and safety programs.
Participates in Quality Committee(s), Medical Leadership Committee, as requested, and/or assigned.
Proactively seeks to continuously improve patient care and operations.
Exhibits competency in performing all functions of assigned area or duties.
Responsible for other functions as assigned by the Director of Nursing and/or the Administrator.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities for Post-operative Area:
Effectively organizes time, equipment, supplies, and personnel for management of the recovery room.
Organizes nursing activities efficiently, considering staff ! abilities when delegating activities.
Uses equipment effectively by! anticipating patient needs and providing appropriate care.
Confirms that proper techniques and procedures are used according to accepted standards of practice.
Assists in managing inventory of supplies, drugs, and equipment to maintain availability and stock levels in the post-operative area.
Maintains order and cleanliness of post-operative area.
Performs safe and individualized nursing care for the patient in the immediate post-operative/post-anesthesia period.
Assesses and documents the patientâs physical and emotional status upon arrival in the recovery room.
Documents post-anesthesia care and identity of second person in the recovery room during the patientâs recovery from anesthesia/sedation according to approved policies and procedures.
Provides nursing care to meet patient needs related to surgical condition and type of anesthesia administered.
Monitors patients and informs surgeon and/or anesthesia provider of observed complicat! ions.
Performs thorough post-operative patient assessment prior to discharge of the patient.
Assists in assessing the physical and emotional status of the patient in preparation for discharge.
Develops a plan of care for the patient based on the assessment data.
Reviews post-operative instructions and prescriptions from the surgeon with patient and significant other and documents in the patientâs medical record.
Informs patient and family about appropriate care and procedure to follow upon returning home.
Determines that patient and significant other understand conditions that require immediate care/method to obtain immediate care.
Qualifications:
Education - Required:
High School graduate or GED certificate recipient.
Graduate of accredited school of nursing.
Current licensure in the State of Ohio as a Registered Nurse.
Must be current in BCLS and ACLS certification.
ACLS/PALS certification within six! months of hire date (applicable to scope of service).

Computer literacy
BSN Degree
Experience:
Previous work experience in an ambulatory surgery setting, acute hospital surgical department of no less than one (1) year.
