Provides prescribed medical treatment and personal care services to pre-operative, post-operative, ill, injured, convalescent, and disabled persons in the hospital setting.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
MAKES AN ASSESSMENT OF AND DETERMINES TOTAL NURSING NEEDS OF ASSIGNED PATIENTS. THE PATIENT POPULATION WOULD INCLUDE:
The Neonate Patient
The Pediatric Patient
The Adolescent Patient
The Young-Middle Aged Adult Patient
The Geriatric Patient
Interviews patient and/or significant other and completes initial assessments in a timely manner.
Adequately assesses and re-assesses pain. Utilizes appropriate pain management techniques.
Develops, updates, and evaluates individualized age specific plan of care including goals, nursing actions, expected outcome, and evaluation.
Implements a plan of care based on assessment data as well as a sound knowledge base.
Initiates PAT and PACU Phase I and II discharge planning to meet patient needs.
Admits, recovers and discharges patients from the Cardiac Cath Laboratory.
Evaluates and modifies the plan of care based on observable responses by the patient and attainment of patient goals.
Recognizes signs and symptoms requiring intervention and initiates appropriate action.
Demonstrates the ability to handle emergency situations during high-risk procedures.
UTILIZING THE NURSING PROCESS, MEETS THE PATIENTS' PHYSICAL AND EMOTIONAL NEEDS AND CARRIES OUT PRESCRIBED TREATMENTS.
Assures accuracy of transcribed orders, including coordination of diagnostic test, lab work, etc.
Administers and documents medication in a safe and timely manner.
Performs treatments and diagnostic testing according to hospital policy and procedure and physician orders.
Assists physician with tests and procedures (e.g., chest tubes, dressing changes, epidural injections).
Adheres to established standards of practice and engages in activities or behaviors that characterize professionals.
Performs role of conscious sedation nurse following hospital policy and procedure.
Assures open and timely communication with the patient, their significant others, and team members to ensure the occurrence of effective therapeutic intervention.
Identifies emotional needs of patient and provides needed support.
Utilizes all available resources in planning care and consults as necessary with resource persons, supervisors, physicians, etc.
Notifies appropriate physician of any abnormal PAT results and documents accordingly.
Accurately documents observations, intervention, and patient teaching according to hospital policy and procedure in concise and pertinent manner.
Orders and stocks supplies to meet patient needs and provide quality care.
PARTICIPATES IN PATIENT/FAMILY EDUCATION PROCESS:
Recognizes and utilizes opportunities for health teaching of patients and significant other as evidenced by documentation on pre-op and post-op assessment forms.
Provides patient with explanation of surgical procedure.
Gives information or explanations to patients and their families as warranted.
ENSURES SAFETY OF THE HOSPITAL ENVIRONMENT:
Ensures that necessary patient safety precautions are taken.
Participates in the maintenance of a clean, orderly and safe environment.
Is aware of and functions within the scope of hospital policies and procedures, disaster/fire manual, and infection control manual.
Complies with legal requirements pertaining to patient care (e.g., consents, logs).
Adheres to the dress code.
Notifies unit manager and/or maintenance and housekeeping of any possible safety concerns.
Attends required hospital safety programs.
RECOGNIZES JOB RELATIONSHIPS AND FUNCTIONS EFFECTIVELY WITHIN THE ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE:
Delegates and supervises patient care based on patient's needs and capabilities and qualifications of personnel.
Coordinates patient care with other departments.
Maintains patient confidentiality.
Cooperates with other personnel to maintain effective relationships both interdepartmentally and interdepartmentally.
Communicates effectively and maintains rapport with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and primary care physicians and office staff.
Participates in economical utilization of supplies and equipment.
Assists in orientation of new personnel.
Performs competently in new and emergency situations.
Maintains good rapport with fellow employees and physicians.
Performs duties in professional and pleasant manner.

Contributes to the efficient and smooth functioning of the departments.

Participates, when requested to do so, on inter- and intradepartmental committees.
Participates in educational programs and hospital in-services to increase professional competence and to meet personal needs and goals.
Demonstrates team approach, floats between PACU, SDS and PAT efficiently.
ASSUMES RESPONSIBILITY FOR INSURING CONTINUED PROFESSIONAL GROWTH FOR IMPROVEMENT OF PATIENT CARE. DEVELOPS AND MAINTAINS THE SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE TO CARE FOR THE SPECIFIC PATIENT POPULATION (S) OF HIS/HER ASSIGNED UNIT.
Attendance at mandatory in-service (i.e., CPR, all day in-service, unit meetings).
Maintains and ensures competency by completing unit specific competency requirements.
Promotes professional growth of co-workers (e.g., preceptor, teaching classes, updating knowledge).
PERFORMS ADDITIONAL DUTIES AS ASSIGNED WITHIN SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITY.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provides functional work directions to other nursing personnel, such as licensed practical nurses, unit clerks, nursing assistants.
Guides LPN's, unit clerks, ORA's and others in the provision of care for the patients.
Interrelates with volunteers in a positive manner.
Utilizes volunteers as resource individuals, according to policy.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
Graduation from an accredited school of professional nursing. Must have critical care experience or at least 3 years of medical-surgical experience. Previous Cath Lab experience preferred.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operation and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
Current license as R.N. in the state of Ohio.
Maintains current certification in BLS, and ACLS.
