Summary of Job Responsibilities:
The Anesthesia Associate will report to the Nurse Manager of Surgical Service! s or designee and is an integral member of the anesthesia patient care team. The Associate provides assistance to the licensed providers in various settings and performs duties under the supervision of a licensed anesthesia provider or Certified Anesthesia Technician; assists the licensed provider in clinical settings; provides support for routine surgical cases by assisting in the preparation and maintenance of patient equipment and anesthesia delivery systems before and during anesthesia. The Anesthesia Associate performs first level maintenance on anesthesia equipment and cleans, sterilizes, disinfects, stocks, orders, and maintains the routine anesthesia equipment.

Education:
High school diploma or GED equivalent

Experience:
A minimum of two (2) years experience as an anesthesia technician or equivalent experience.

Knowledge and Skills:
1. Follows detailed written and oral instructions.

2. Completes sp! ecific, routine tasks.

3. Requires basic reading, wri! ting, and simple arithmetic skills.

4. May operate basic equipment and machinery.

Principle Job Accountabilities

1. Maintains and organizes the anesthesia environment, equipment, and supplies to facilitate department function in all anesthetizing areas.

a. Must have a thorough knowledge of the set-up, operations, and troubleshooting of anesthesia machines, monitors, and ancillary equipment.

b. Will maintain a sufficient inventory of all equipment and supplies.

c. Responsible for the acquisition of all equipment for anesthesia cases.

d. Will be knowledgeable of various aseptic techniques used for routine cleaning, disinfecting, sterilizing, and storing of all reusable equipment and supplies.

e. Assists in the development of an active continuing education program for the anesthesia technicians.

f. As assigned by the Surgical Services Nurse Manager or designee, participates on hospital committees.!

g. Maintains the cleanliness and organization of all anesthesia workstations on a daily basis.

h. Maintains, inspects, and replaces as necessary a safe and secure sharps disposal system.

i. Maintains cleanliness of equipment cleaning area.

j. Maintains supply stock in workrooms and all anesthesia workstations in a rotational fashion.

k. Inventories, orders, and maintains departmental supply stock consistent with departmental demand.

l. Maintains the sterilization of carbon dioxide absorbers as scheduled.

m. Recognizes and adheres to universal precautions in all clinical areas.

n. Handles equipment and items correctly to insure ever-present availability and safety of supplies and materials.

o. Reports equipment in need of repair and verifies proper repair upon return to department.

2. Provides perioperative technical support to anesthesia professional staff for delivery of patient care! .

a. Maintains availability of necessary equipment in each ope! rating room.

b. Prepares and assembles the necessary equipment for intravenous/invasive lines as requested.

c. Performs well under extreme pressure of life threatening emergencies.

d. Makes available, assembles, and assists with the operations of specialized equipment such as humidification units, fiberoptic endoscopic equipment, and rapid infusion devices.

e. Demonstrates speed and timelines in all duties, particularly preparation for emergencies and trauma procedures.

f. While the primary function of the professional anesthesia staff, may assist as needed:

1. Assists in preparation and draping of patient for invasive monitoring/procedures by the anesthesia care providers.

2. Assists and anticipates needs of Anesthesiologists in invasive monitoring insertion and procedures such as pulmonary artery catheter, central venous access, fiberoptic intubation, and/or difficult airway situation.

3. Anticipates ! need for invasive monitoring according to daily OR schedule.

4. Aids in preparation of patients for major invasive monitoring and/or difficult cases including, but not limited to, placement of BP cuff, ECG leads, pilse oximeter.

5. Sets up OR for cases which may include the following: preparation of laryngoscope and intubation equipment, preparation and labeling of blank syringes, IV bag and tubing set-up, and set-up of IV warming devices.

6. Other duties as assigned consistent with their job requirements and capabilities.

7. Maintains current BCLS Certification

8. Holds employees and co-workers accountable for keeping patient safety the first priority in performing the essential duties of their jobs.
